West Michigan’s variable spring weather pattern

This morning while I was preparing the breakfast for our guests at the Inn, I had the morning news on as I always do.  The weather storms that have been hitting much of the country and our own forecast for the Saugatuck Michigan area all are clear indicators that we are in our spring variable weather pattern.  Temperatures of 30 degrees and 70 degrees are all in the forecast for this week at the Inn as well as showers, storms, sunshine and mild clear days.  Definitely part of the “usual” spring weather pattern, but none the less not an easy thing to plan for from day to day.

Birthday celebration for B&B Innkeeper

Well it’s that time of year again, time for my own birthday to roll around once again.  Hard to believe that I am still so young!  HAH!  But with a full house at the bed and breakfast these couple of days, it will be difficult to celebrate the birthday too much.  But then even a chance to get out for a walk along Lake Michigan today will likely make the day much more special.  Who knows, we may even be able to sneak in a movie or dinner out some where at one of the many area restaurants.

Lake Michigan sees return of sail boats, ships

Just down the road from the bed and breakfast are several pole barns that house recreational sail boats, speed boats and katamarans.  This weekend some of the owners of these boats have been bringing them out of winter storage and out to their summer home in Lake Michigan’s harbors.  The return of the boating season means a lot of things for our Saugatuck community, but primarily it means that the summer season is once again upon us.  Always a special time of year that we celebrate with a fury.

Michigan Wine Package weekend at the Inn

This weekend, the bed and breakfast is hosting one of our wine lover’s weekend getaway packages.  Always a special event, Fenn Valley winery teams with us on this effort.  It includes a behind the scenes tour of Fenn Valley winery and vineyards as well as a six-course Italian meal here at the Inn.  A different selected wine is paired with each course and explained by the experts from Fenn Valley winery.  The winery is one of the first in the state of Michigan and are our “neighbors” just down the road from the bed and breakfast.

Signs of summer in West Michigan

I took note today that signs are now posted on some of our area roadways of upcoming season repair work.  Then I noticed a load of field tile being delivered to some farm for a spring time project in their field.  On the back in to town, I then saw a trailer of kayaks head out to some marina probably near Lake Michigan.  All of these made me think of how the signs of summer are all starting to happen in our area of West Michigan.  It will be here before we know it.

New Buffalo Michigan welcome center the first in the country

Earlier today, we crossed over the Indiana/Michigan border and stopped at the New Buffalo welcome center.  One of the busiest welcome centers in the state of Michigan, many people do not realize that it was also the first location in the entire nation that had a welcome center for visitors.  This is likely due to the fact that many have been coming to West Michigan for decades for getaway escapes and to experience all that our great area of the country has to offer.

Tulip time right on schedule?

While going to the mailbox this morning at the bed and breakfast, I noticed that the tulip and daffodil bulbs all seem to continue to push their way up through the semi-frozen ground.  Holland’s tulip festival is some years “right on schedule” and others like last year the tulips all seemed to bloom before the festival week even began.  But given the cooler early spring that we have been experiencing in West Michigan this year, the tulips will most likely be “right on schedule” during the tulip festival in Holland.

Lighthouses of Lake Michigan

Today we were in South Haven, just south of the bed and breakfast.  While there, we walked along the pier of Lake Michigan and out to the famous South Haven lighthouse.   The lighthouses along the west coast of Michigan are all of varying interest and structures and are always interesting monuments to visit while in the area.  Granted, today’s walk was another brisk one with the strong winds off of Lake Michigan, but it was a beautiful sunny day none the less so still a very nice opportunity to get out and enjoy the day and one of the many lighthouses of Lake Michigan.

Saugatuck Michigan area restaurant choices

One of the things we do when we check guests in to the bed and breakfast is help with restaurant choices in the surrounding Saugatuck Michigan area.  Living here as owners of a local bed and breakfast, we tend to take for granted just how many options we have when it comes to dining.  Although some of these options are primarily open in the summer to fall time of year, there are quite a number of these restaurants that stay open year-round and have a wide range of food options available on their menu.

Sunshine is deceiving today

From inside the bed and breakfast walls looking out, one would think that it is a rather warm and pleasant day today.  After running our errands in Saugatuck and Holland today, we came back to the bed and breakfast to enjoy a brisk walk around town for some exercise.  Well in today’s sunshine, it is also quite brisk cold as well for a late March Saturday afternoon.  So our walk was quite brisk in several regards to say the least.  Oh well, we certainly can’t complain about having the sunshine in West Michigan can we???
