Delicious bed and breakfast treat–easy apple dumplings

One of the joys of being an Innkeeper is hearing our guests rave about our breakfasts each morning.  Our bed and breakfast serves a full hot breakfast each morning.  An easy recipe that also incorporates Michigan apples is our “Easy Apple Dumplings” which take very little time to make, but do produce many praises from the Inn guests.  It starts with a refrigerator crescent roll and a large tart apple (such as Granny Smith).  Core and slice the apple into 8 slices, roll each slice inside a crescent and place in a 8×8 pan.  Mix together 1/2 cup sugar, 1/2 cup melted butter, 1/2 tsp cinnamon and 6oz. mountain dew.  Pour mixture over top and bake at 350 for 30 mins.  These are also wonderful serves as a desert with natural vanilla ice cream.  YUM!

Saugatuck lodging special discount a great way to save $$$

Call us crazy, but we are one of the few Saugatuck area bed and breakfasts that offer special discounts in the summer season.  We have been offering this special discount for some time and don’t see any reason to stop now.  Repeat guests of our B&B Inn love the fact that they can count on staying weekdays in the summer and save money too.  It really is a great time of the week to visit as well because there isn’t nearly as many folks in the towns of Saugatuck, Holland and South Haven as there is on the weekends.

Romantic Suites of B&B Inn have their own history

Guests of our bed and breakfast are often interested in the history of the Inn’s luxurious suites and rooms.  As a Michigan farmer, Harvey Kingsley and his wife did not pamper themselves in romantic getaway suite experiences.  Rather, the suites of the bed and breakfast all had their own unique purpose as a part of the Inn back when it was merely a Michigan farm house.  The Northern Spy suite was the attic of the mansion, the Cider Nook suite was the former wine cellar of the house, the Jonathan was the stable boy’s quarters and the Granny Smith was actually the master bedroom of the Kingsley’s when it was built back in 1886.

Michigan planting season completed for bed and breakfast

Every year we enjoy the two-month cycle of planting perennials, annuals, shrubs, trees, etc. around the bed and breakfast to spruce it up for the coming season.  Our Inn guests always comment on just how beautiful the grounds of the bed and breakfast are as a result of our efforts.  The West Michigan planting season typically doesn’t “safely” begin until the beginning of May, but we always find ways around it to make it work to our advantage.  It may seem odd, but our way of knowing when we are officially “done” with the spring plantings is when we have the spring vehicle detailing done for us.  It was just completed this weekend, which means that we can not haul anymore significantly large amount of plants in it as we have for the past two months.  Yeah!  Another true sign that summer is officially here!

Saugatuck Brewery serves great food too

Our bed and breakfast guests wouldn’t automatically think of the Saugatuck Brewery when considering their dining options in the area, but it definitely is worth a visit for not only some of the best Michigan brews in the area, but also great casual food.  Although not actually in Saugatuck, the brewery is located on Blue Star Highway in nearby Douglas Michigan.  We were looking for something different to eat one night this week when we decided to eat on the brewery’s patio deck for the first time this summer.  It was very good for light casual fare and at very affordable prices.  Plus you can pair your light meal with any of the Saugatuck Brewery’s signature brews!

Bed and Breakfast guests enjoy spa basket

One of the many options we have for our romantic getaway couples is a spa basket that can be added to any stay in one of our luxury suites or well-appointed rooms at the bed and breakfast.   It includes a romantic piano CD,  Michigan’s Fenn Valley wine or sparkling juice (with our compliments),  gourmet chocolates, luxury spa items,  a scented soy candle and other surprises.  For full details of the spa basket and to order online, be sure to look in out Romance Enhancements section of our Inn’s website or just add it to your online reservation before completing your online reservation.

West Michigan weather is multi-faceted

Today was definitely one of those days that shows just how changing our weather can be in West Michigan.  Last night/early morning we received over two inches of rain here at the bed and breakfast Inn and in Saugatuck the rainfall measured over three inches.  But as is typical of West Michigan, the sun is shining brightly through the window and it is 75 degrees as I formulate this blog entry.  In fact, our current bed and breakfast guests here on a romantic getaway are heading out for a fine dinner at Everyday People and planning on sitting on the beach to watch the gorgeous Lake Michigan sunset.    How’s that for a change in the weather?

Saugatuck Oval Beach a Michigan destination

One of the most favorite beaches of our bed and breakfast guests is Oval Beach in Saugatuck.  With Lake Michigan just five minutes from the bed and breakfast, it is easy to understand why so many of our Inn’s guests like to relax at the beach on their getaway vacation.  This past weekend, our guests shared lots of photos of sunsets at Oval Beach and the splendor of the sky (especially on Sunday evening) when the colors of the sunset including oranges and purples that made for a glorious end to our guest’s holiday getaway.

Holiday Weekend getaway for many of our B&B guests

Today we took down the patriotic bunting and flags from the Memorial Day holiday weekend with fond memories of the many great bed and breakfast guests we had here this past weekend.  Many of them were on an early summer vacation getaway visiting the Saugatuck area and several were here celebrating birthdays.  Now that we are past the Memorial Day weekend, experiencing warm sunny days and officially into the month June, it truly does feel like the summer season has begun.

Southwest Michigan authentic Mexican restaurant

One of the perks of staying at the Kingsley House Bed and Breakfast is the numerous dining options available in Saugatuck, South Haven, Holland and beyond.  But we also have great dining just a couple of blocks from the Inn.  One of these restaurants is a real authentic Mexican restaurant that our bed and breakfast guests often enjoy.  It is an easy walk away and open year-round.  Whether it is a basket of chips and GREAT guacamole with a ice cold margarita you are crazing or a full meal, you are sure to be able to find it at Su Casa.
