Bed and breakfast guests enjoy numerous summer amenities

Today is one of those perfect early summer days to enjoy the many amenities we offer our bed and breakfast guests.  Among these are a couple on a romantic getaway who have been enjoying using the hammock in the side garden, guests on a weekend holiday getaway enjoying the back garden swing and of course the always-popular porch swing always getting lots of attention.  We also have lawn games such as beg bag toss, croquet, frisbees, etc. and lawn checkers that our bed and breakfast guests have been enjoying this weekend.  It’s always a pleasure for us to see our guests taking advantage of these many extra perks that we offer here at the Inn.

Saugatuck’s Red Dock opening officially opens summer season

One of the true signs that the Saugatuck Michigan summer season has arrived is the opening of the Red Dock, which is located on the waterfront between Douglas and Saugatuck.  An annual ritual for some of our bed and breakfast guests, the Red Dock serves light fare and cocktails with a Key West feel on the dock near Keewatin Museum (the big boat on the water in Saugatuck harbor).  Very casual and unpretentious, Red Dock is a great place to go unwind for an hour or and afternoon/evening.  But it’s only open from Memorial Day to Labor Day so be sure to go while here for our summer season.

Michigan’s first fruit of the summer season

Thanks to our warm Michigan weather, we at the bed and breakfast have been harvesting our rhubarb quite frequently already this year.  We were able to give quite a bit of it to some friends of ours who own a bed and breakfast in downtown Saugatuck.  We have also been making our own bed and breakfast guests treats like rhubarb coffee cake and strawberry rhubarb muffins.  It is always such a treat to be able to harvest the rhubarb out of our own garden to use for our Inn’s guest breakfasts both now and year-round (rhubarb also freezes very well and we are able to use it year-round as well).

Saugatuck & Michigan Memorial Holiday Weekend forecast

For as long as I have lived in the Saugatuck Michigan area, there has been few times when we have had such a beautiful Memorial Holiday weekend forecast.  Our bed and breakfast guests are going to be very pleased when the come to West Michigan this coming weekend and find themselves in “Sunny and Pleasant” low-80 temperature forecast for their weekend getaway.  Lake Michigan isn’t quite “swimable” temperature yet, but other than that, we really couldn’t ask for a more pleasant forecast.  It definitely will be a nice one to remember for a long time to come.

Bed and Breakfast Getaway through the Midwest

As much as we enjoy Southwest Michigan, we also enjoy traveling, near or far.  We recently took a day off from the bed and breakfast and the Saugatuck area to enjoy a two-day trip back through Indiana, Illinois and Iowa.  My family has visited me in Michigan many times and most of them are still back in northeast Iowa, so it is always great to get back together with family.  There is definitely something to be said for growing up in the Midwest and having the value system that we learn here in the Midwest.  Traveling from Michigan west through the Midwest states is a reminder of the importance of these values.

South Haven Michigan a great tourism town closeby

We often tell our bed and breakfast guests to make sure they spend some time in nearby South Haven Michigan.  On the coast of Lake Michigan, the town boasts a great lake front area with a beautiful pier and lighthouse as well as many things to see and do in the town and surrounding area.  Today while my mother is in town we had lunch and did a little browsing through the shops of South Haven and it is always one of our suggestions for guests looking for nearby adventures and small beach towns on the Lake Michigan coast.  Just 20 minutes from the bed and breakfast, it is definitely one of the towns that make living in West Michigan so great.

Saugatuck Summer season has arrived

With a forecast of mid-80 degree weather for coming week, it is evident that summer has already arrived in the Saugatuck Michigan area.  It should be a fantastic Memorial day weekend for our bed and breakfast guests and those visiting Saugatuck, Lake Michigan’s beaches and all of West Michigan.  Summer seems to have arrived early this year, which is always welcome for those of us who live in the Southwest Michigan area and the guests of our bed and breakfast.  Why not plan an early visit this summer instead of waiting until the crowds arrive?

Michigan perennial flowers–how many is too many?

Since moving to the Saugatuck Michigan area to start the bed and breakfast business some seven years ago, the amount and variety of perennial flowers has grown and grown tremendously at the Inn.  Never did I imagine when starting in the bed and breakfast business that so much of our time would be spent in the gardens.  But that is precisely what happens this time of year, but we have to admit that we really do love it.  Today we once again found a new unexplored nursery offering great prices up in Holland Michigan, on the corner of Waverly and Chicago Drive called Engelman’s.  This time of year they offer a special on perennials that we couldn’t resist…buy two, get three free!  So of course we came home with yet another truck load.  Oh well, our guest of the bed and breakfast do enjoy it as much as us, so it’s all great in the end.

Bed and Breakfast guests have new lawn games to enjoy

As Innkeepers, we are constantly finding new and additional amenities for our bed and breakfast guests to enjoy.  Michigan’s weather does not always allow for lawn games, but when it does we are prepared with a choice of different lawn games for the Inn guests.  After breakfast or after a day of exploring Saugatuck, a day at the Michigan wineries or just anytime at all, our B&B guests can partake of a game of croquet, whiffleball, frisbee and other assorted lawn games.  Today we also purchased a bean bag throw for our guests to enjoy on our beautiful lawns.  After all, relaxing isn’t all about laying on the hammock or sitting on the front porch swing all day either.

Saugatuck Yacht Boat Charters

Yesterday evening we were invited by a Saugatuck Boat Charter company to go on a cruise of Lake Michigan.    It departed the Saugatuck harbor and cruised down the Kalamazoo River, eventually winding it’s way out to Lake Michigan.  Fellow bed and breakfast and lodging businesses were also in attendance and it was great to spend a quiet evening on Lake Michigan with other Saugatuck area Innkeepers.  The invitation was extended by Sue and Mike of Yacht Boat Charters, who also provide chartered cruises for individuals, company events, weddings and more.  Our bed and breakfast guests should just ask us if interested in exploring this option further while visting the greater Saugatuck area this summer.
