It occurred to me this evening as we drove into our own driveway at the bed and breakfast that our Inn almost appears to resemble a big carousel right now with all of the Christmas decorations already in place. We always enjoy lighting up the bed and breakfast and our guests who venture to this area of Michigan each year always seem to enjoy it as well. But could we have gone a little over the top? Nawwww…
Today is one of those blustery November days that remind you why so many of our bed and breakfast guests prefer a fireplace suite for a warm and toasty romantic getaway. Living in Michigan anytime from October to May one can appreciate why having a fireplace within your own suite is such a warm and toasty addition to a suite. While going about our day today, we have had our own gas log fireplace roaring next to our gourgeous Christmas tree. It definitely does make one want to stay in all day long and not venture out.
By far one of the most favorite restaurants in our area is the Everyday People Cafe in nearby downtown Douglas. And another reason we really like Everyday People is that they are open literally everyday year-round. In the surrounding Saugatuck and Lake Michigan area, quite a few of the local restaurants close during the slow season and/or have limited hours. But Everyday People is a great gourmet restaurant that stays open year-round to cater to our bed and breakfast guests who come anytime of year.
Everywhere you go these days, there are true signs that the Christmas and holiday season are coming up soon. Christmas decorations and holiday merchandise are appearing everywhere these days in West Michigan, which is of course the usual for this time of year. What isn’t so usual though is the 70 degree weather of this week. So “getting in the holiday spirit” is kind of difficult for those of us who have lived in Michigan and the midwest most of our lives. But alas, based on the upcoming week’s weather forecast, it would appear that this will be changing soon enough.
One of the great things about our location of the bed and breakfast is the number of antique stores and galleries up and down the Lake Michigan coast from Holland and Saugatuck down to New Buffalo. Many of our bed and breakfast guests take advantage of this while staying at the Inn with us. For ourselves, we have often times found some really great deals on antiques that would be much more if purchased in Chicago or Detroit areas.
Some of our Saugatuck area businesses have been posting their upcoming holiday specials for the thanksgiving and Christmas holiday specials over the past couple of weeks. It seems very strange though with the weather we have been experiencing lately. Our weather seems a bit more like June or September this week rather than November and with the holidays just around the corner. Almost a bit difficult to believe!
The forecast for the coming week seems to be absolutely amazing for Saugatuck and all of West Michigan Lakefront. After what was a pretty cool November weekend, today begins a week long stretch of unseasonably warm weather with temperatures climbing into the mid 60’s. Our Indian Summers usually occur sometime in October after the fist freeze of the year, but with the long warm season for us in West Michigan this year, it’s really no surprise that our Indian summer is late this year as well.

Sometimes it would seem that we are operating a West Michigan day spa or salon and not a bed and breakfast at all. Such is the case this weekend as we have eight in-house massages here at the Inn this weekend. Although we are pretty sure our bed and breakfast guests will enjoy lots more than just the spa treatments, it’s a sure beat that part of their memories of the stay with us here at the Inn will be their fantastic massages and the pampering touches we offer here at our bed and breakfast.
Midday today a cold front entered the West Michigan area and it is very evident here at the bed and breakfast that the temperatures have dropped. Sometimes it seems like mother nature is playing a trick on us all in the Saugatuck area by gracing us with unseasonably warm temperatures, only to be followed with brisk cold winds coming across Lake Michigan that remind us once again that it is November. Oh well, at least the temperatures here at the Inn make it feel more seasonal after all.
