Saugatuck merchants returning for summer season

Today when we were walking around the streets of Saugatuck we ran into a number of local merchants that we have not seen around in awhile and it was quite obvious that there is a feeling of excitement and anticipation in the air as everyone starts to prepare for the upcoming summer season.   It is always good to season familiar faces that aren’t always full time Saugatuck residents returning for another season as it really does make you feel all that much more excited about the season yourself.

Happy Easter from all of us at the Bed and Breakfast

What a fantastic Easter day it has been here at the bed and breakfast and all across Western Michigan and the lakefront.  Warm temps, calm and sunshine all made for a great spring day in this area of the country today.  Never mind that we have rain in the forecast for the week ahead (which is pretty typical for spring weather in Michigan), for today the weather has been just fine.  So Happy Easter to all of our former and future bed and breakfast guests and to anyone reading this blog.

Bed and breakfast tulips behind last year

So far at the bed and breakfast and across all of the Saugatuck Michigan and Holland Michigan areas we have not really seen any of the tulips opening just yet.  A very big difference compared to one year ago when the tulips were all blooming by this time and in full bloom late April before the Holland tulip festival even began in early May.  What a difference one year can make from the early spring we had just last year to the late spring of this year.  Oh well, it just means that the tulips should be timed perfectly to be in full bloom during the actual tulip festival this year.

Easter weekend in Michigan

This year it seems as though Easter took it’s time getting here but it’s finally upon us now.  Always a great time of year when spring colors are back in style, Easter egg hunts are in process and everyone is in cheery moods, especially the young and young-at-heart.  The weather looks like it might just cooperate after all too as rain and storm clouds are scheduled to move out of West Michigan later today giving way to a fairly warm spring like weather forecast for the rest of the weekend.

Sunshine abundant in West Michigan today

It was obvious this morning that our bed and breakfast guests at breakfast this morning were anxious to get out for the day and we don’t blame them one bit.  The sunshine is quite abundant today and it looks to be a wonderful day to explore all of the West Michigan surrounding attractions, wineries, antique mall, Lake Michigan and more.  To be quite frank, we ourselves are anxious to finish up our cleaning and get out and about to enjoy the sunshine too.  How could you not want to get out on a day like today?

Pansy flowers at bed and breakfast endure the storms, cold, wind, rain

Last evening the Saugatuck and West Michigan area all experienced some rather rough storms along with cold, wind, hail, rain and more.  But what look like fragile little flowers, the pansies that we planted around the bed and breakfast all seemed as though they were saying “just try us.”  It’s hard to believe that what looks like such fragile little flowers seem to always be able to be tough enough to endure this time of year even after we had some untimely snow at the beginning of this last week.  One tough little flower!

Saugatuck Area Business Association Spring Kick-off

As a member of the Saugatuck Area Business Association, we routinely attend the celebratory events held by this great organization each year and one of these is the annual Spring Kick-off social event.  Today was the date for this event at the Laketown Golf and Recreation center on the north side of Saugatuck.    Sadly, we weren’t able to attend it after all as the bed and breakfast check-in duties sometimes prevent us from being able to attend these events.  But just knowing that it was held today is a great date each year as it marks the beginning of the busy season for us all and the return of the many visitors to our area of West Michigan.

New Saugatuck nursery opening on Blue Star highway

Driving down blue star highway near Saugatuck today, I was once again intriqued by a nursery that is opening up this season for the first time appropriately called “Blue Star Nursery.”  The Saugatuck area of west Michigan has not really been blessed with a warm spring season just yet, so I doubt that we will be purchasing too many nursery items just yet.  So although I have been very tempted to start visiting the nurseries this year, I know it just isn’t time quite yet to start plantings at the bed and breakfast.  Soon though!!!

Sunshine bright over West Michigan today

With our weather being the typical spring rains lately, the sun shining down on the Michigan lakefront today was a very welcome surprise.  Of course we appreciate that the April showers bring May flowers, but still it is awfully nice to see the sun shining while we were out and about today for a brief period of time.  It definitely can change your mood to see the sunshine even if it is one day at a time in these Spring months of the year.

New driveway at bed and breakfast should be fully cured

As any of our bed and breakfast guests of this week know, we had the driveway of the Inn tore up and re-poured with a new concrete driveway.  We were so very lucky to have had three days in a row of clear skies and warm weather.  But now that the April showers have returned for the coming week, we have been told by “those in the know” that this steady slow rains that we are having this week are a very good thing in order for the concrete to “cure” further.  Effective tomorrow, we should be able to drive on the new driveway so it will be extra nice knowing that the Inn has a new driveway.
